At the 3.1 Phillip Lim Sample Sale

I stopped by the 3.1 Phillip Lim Sample Sale midday yesterday and the 40 minute wait was well worth it because there was an abundance of great merchandise, that was moving fast!  Designer Phillip Lim was working the room and model Tao Okamoto was helping to put clothes back on the rack.  I even overheard Phillip Lim tell a woman that she looked great in a dress and suggested that she wear it with leggings for a young, hip look.  The items range from $30 for swimwear and underwear, $50 tees, dresses from $150 to $300.  Shoes were priced at $100 a pair, which is an excellent deal, but there wasn't too much left.   All proceeds go to the American Red Cross Japan Relief Fund, so you should check it out too and if you're lucky, maybe get some styling advice from the designer himself!

I was lusting after these wedges but unfortunately it was last pair and not my size anyway! Go before there are none left!

The Ralph M. Chait Galleries have a history of over 100 years in New York City, and is one of the oldest galleries to specialize in fine antique Chinese porcelain.  Some of the pieces that stood out included a rare large blue and white porcelain plate which had been off the market for 60 years and charming and lively stucco figure of a seated Lohan.  It was truly special exhibit with many vibrant pieces.  Only a few blocks away are visit-worthy exhibits at MD Flacks showing a variety of Chinese Scholar's trays and Dalton SomarĂ© displaying early artwork from the Indian Subcontinent.

International Beauty Show

I stopped the International Beauty Show at the Javits Center and caught the last hour before the expo ended.  The expo was huge and I definitely would love to attend again next year.  There were so many interesting products and services to learn about and try out.  I had a chance to stop by Bling Strands and I had 2 feather extensions put into my hair and loved it!  I paid $5 per feather and they also put in 2 complimentary glitter strands.  I was told that the feather extensions should last 1 - 3 months.

The faces behind Tusk Handbag

Diana Lee (Founder of AsianinNY.com) and I recently met with luxury leather handbag and accessories company Tusk Founder and Creative Director Hiten Manseta and designer Michelle Chang at their flagship Chelsea store. Hiten shared with us the story behind Tusk and Michelle talked about this season's inspiration.

Hiten, who is from Bombay, India founded Tusk about 20 years ago in New York City.  He had tried his hand at a few different businesses, which did not succeed.  His luck changed when he decided to sell handbags from India.  Although he didn't make any sales initially, he slowly began receiving orders, and his business blossomed.  However, Hiten didn't just want to sell product without creating a global brand. He asked his friends to help him come up with the name. He did not want an American name nor did he want to use his name, because at that time India didn't have the image it has today.  He wanted an easy to remember name that was global in nature, but not necessarily ethnic Indian.  One of his friends came up with Tusk, and in Hiten's mind, this was perfect because Tusk was broad, and could mean an African Elephant or an Indian elephant. Tusk could also be applied to different product categories and would be perfect for perfume, jewelry, clothing, or a restaurant. Another friend came up with the stylized logo.

Hiten then met designer Michelle Chang, from Taiwan, who was introduced to him through a business friend, a leather agent.  Michelle tries to keep in mind the heritage of Tusk and uses a lot of Indian inspiration with a modern American twist when designing Tusk handbags.  She's also inspired by jewelry, which is apparent in the hardware.  She attends trade show to see trends and makes visits to India.  This season's inspiration was a more rugged urban look.  She really wanted let customers see the natural grain of the leather, so there's a lot of beautiful texture in the leathers.  Next season, Michelle would like to use more Indian inspired fabrics. The talented Michelle also is planning to develop her own jewelry line!

Tusk does not just want to be trendy or just some flavor of the month.  Their designs are beautiful, unique, and functional.  The bags are lined with a bright purple lining with an attached card holder and key chain.  The Tusk customer is not just following a brand, they're looking for something luxurious and different and Tusk handbag certainly delivers with integrity!

Tusk Handbags Spring 2011 Preview

I attended the Spring Preview event recently for Tusk Handbags. There was a nice variety of luxurious and exotic leather bags, leather purses, leather backpacks, messenger bags, totes.  I liked the unique and versatile styles. There were lots of bags in pretty spring shades of green and lavender, beige, as well as metallic tones with nice hardware.  Tusk also provide some fun services for guests at the event such as henna designs and manicures by Incoco.com.
