Highlights from the IFDA Print Fair

Last week, I stopped by the IFDA Print Fair at the Park Avenue Armory.  I wish I had more time to spend there because there was so much to see: nearly 500 years of printmaking from early woodcuts and traditional engravings to etchings, lithographs, and innovative contemporary projects by international artists.   Here are some of my favorite pieces:
Fold II, Anish Kapoor (Paragon Press)

Three color reliefs by Shepard Fairy on handmade paper. (Pace Prints)

Dessert Skirt IV (Will Cotton, 2013), Pace Prints
Calliope, Will Cotton (Pace Print)

Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah (Mel Bochner,  2014), Two Palms

100% Organic Skincare: Magic Pad

I received a sample last week of The Magic Pads to review.  The product is 100% cruelty free, 100% vegan, 99% organic, and very effective.  The ingredients are a unique blend of Glycolic acid, Organic Willow Bark, Hyaluronic acid, and Vitamin E. The active ingredients penetrate deeply to help clear acne and blemishes, smooth, tighten, and shrink pores, exfoliate, and tone for healthier and younger looking skin.

tried it as part of my night time cleansing routine for a few days and I'm a fan of the product.  There are 50 pads in a lightweight jar that's perfect for travelers.  It's fragrance free, which I prefer, since I have sensitive skin.  But there's still a slight scent to it, which did not bother me.  It really removed the dirt from my skin and left my face feeling gently exfoliated, very soft and moisturized.

At $19.95, it's a decent price for a quality product. The Magic Pad is offering AliceinQueens readers free shipping.  Use code: ALICEINQUEENS during checkout.  This would make a great stocking stuffer, especially for those who prefer organic products.

YUE《约》 Magazine 3rd Annual Gala: Leaders in Philanthropy

YUE Magazine publisher, Chiu-Ti Jansen hosted the magazine's Third Annual Gala at Harmonie Club near Central Park on October 20th, 2014.  The gala honored eight of the most prominent Chinese and Chinese American influencers in the world of philanthropy: David Henry Hwang, Yue-Sai Kan, Anla Cheng Kingdon, Michelle Kwan, Lang Lang, Richard Lui, Hao Jiang Tian and Shirley Young.  It was really amazing and inspiring to see all these successful people gather and celebrate philanthropy.

“YUE, derived from the Chinese rendition of New York, literally means rendezvous and promise. More than a lifestyle magazine, YUE is about building an exciting community around shared ideas and aspirations. What could be a better way to accomplish this objective than giving back to our communities?”, remarked Ms. Jansen.

Notable guests at the gala, in addition to the honorees and senior executives of YUE luxury advertisers, included: Mr. and Mrs. Chen Guoqing (co-founder of  the HNA Group and Hainan Airlines), Datuk Zang Toi (fashion designer), Chien Chung Pei (Principal of the Pei Partnership Architects and Chairman of the China Institute), Geoffrey Bradfield (Architecture Digest 100 interior designer), among others.

Oscar de La Renta: Remembering a Fashion Icon

A great in American fashion design just passed away yesterday.  I found a picture that I took of Mr. Oscar de la Renta hugging Diane von Furstenburg at Bergdorf Goodman's Spring Preview in 2012.   We will always remember this iconic designer who created stunning gowns worn by the likes of celebrities and political figures.

Born in Santiago, Dominican Republic, de la Renta studied in Spain and apprenticed under the renowned Cristóbal Balenciaga.  He became a couture assistant at Balmain.

In 1965, he started his own eponymous couture collection which became a staple on the red carpet and high profile weddings for the rich and famous.  Oscar de la Renta was also the first Dominican to design for a French couture house, Balmain, from 1993 - 2002.

NOLCHA Fashion Week: JBurgos Spring/Summer 2015

New York City based JBurgos designer, Jennifer Burgos, showcased her Spring/Summer 2015 Collection at Nolcha Fashion Week.  This season's collection was inspired by her tropical roots, which was evident in warm hues of turquoise green, blue, and coral. This was a seductive line with plenty of exposed décolletage.  A favorite piece was a satin turquoise jumpsuit with sequined sleeves and a plunging V-neck. Another eye-catching look was a flirtatious sweetheart peplum top with turquoise piping paired with black satin pants.  This was a fun, coquettish line that I could see women wearing on a night out on town.

The Harlem School of the Arts Celebrates Their Fall 2014 Benefit at Jazz At Lincoln Center

I recently attended The Harlem School of the Arts (HSA)'s Fall Benefit at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Appel Room in New York City.  HSA has transformed the lives of tens of thousands of young people through world-class training in the arts, and this annual benefit offered the iconic art institution an opportunity to thank its various donors and supporters.
Left to Right: Rashid Silvera, Christopher J. Williams, Janice Savin Williams, Yvette L. Campbell, Actors Nicole Ari Parker and Boris Kodjoe
This year’s gala featured an array of musical, dance and theater performances, including HSA’s Advanced Jazz Combo, Maria Ahn on cello, Lucia Ahn on piano, an excerpt from the theatre department’s Soul Nativity, and performances by HSA student dancers, actors and musicians.

“I relish the opportunity to honor each and every person and organization that supports what we are trying to do at the Harlem Schoolof the Arts, which is to keep our doors open all year long so that young people can explore the future artist within themselves,” explains Yvette L. Campbell, HSA President & CEO.
(Left to Right): Mayor Dinkins and WNBC’s David Ushery (Master of Ceremonies).
The night’s honorees were GE Asset Management, Christopher M. Keogh and Hearst Foundations. The evening was hosted by WNBC’s David Ushery.

Prince's Muse and Protégé: Tamar Davis Special Performance at The Cutting Room NYC

I recently was invited to a special one night only performance by Tamar Davis at the Cutting Room in NYC.  This was the first time I heard her perform, and I was blown away by her voice and energy.  Tamar, a grammy nominated singer, is known as the muse, favorite singer and protégé of her mentor, Prince.
Opening for Tamar Davis was Dandy Wellington and His Band, who sang some great Jazz standards.

Brooklyn Museum: Killer Shoes

I recently attended the Brooklyn Museum's Killer Shoe Exhibit. The exhibit was a fascinating display all types of shoes with height from different parts of the world.  The history of elevated shoes goes far in history, with silk wedges from China and geta sandals from Japan.  I'm a typical woman, so I do own several pairs of heels.  But as I get older, I try to lean toward comfort (wedges, platforms chunky heels), and try to steer clear from stilettos and anything higher than 3inches.

My Woman Crush Wednesday: Style Icon Audrey Hepburn

I didn't know about #WCW until recently, which if you don't know means Woman Crush Wednesday.  One of the women who I have a "crush" on is the beautiful Audrey Hepburn.   The Givenchy black gown accessorized with black elbow gloves that Audrey wore in 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' is an iconic look recognized by everyone.

She was the epitome of style and grace.  But she wasn't just a pretty face; she devoted much of her later life to UNICEF and became a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. Who's your #WCW?

Michael Costello Fashion Show Spring/Summer 2015

The Michael Costello Fashion Show Spring/Summer 2015 Fashion Show was a collection of sultry and dramatic dresses and gowns.  This was the first time I attended his show and I was pleasantly surprised
The show started with floral and lace cocktail dresses and gowns in mint and cream.
It soon graduated to metallic blues and green gowns with plunging necklines and dramatic kimono sleeves.
