Tamar Daniel Fall 2012 Collection Preview

I recently attended a cocktail party featuring Tamar Daniel's Fall 2012 Collection at Lifestyle Trimco.  The Israeli-British-American designer has previously designed for Topshop and Anthropologie before launching her namesake collection.  The pieces are "low maintenance, high style", machine washable and packable.  The designer's inspiration for the fall season is her mother's pottery and it is evident in the warm colors and silhouettes.  The fabrics used ranged from soft jersey to textured and fine cashmere with flattering draping and also more structured looking pieces.  Tamar described her line as a collection for the working girl who is on the go.  The pieces are versatile and can be mixed and matched and are perfect for transition from the office to a cocktail party.  To see more of Tamar Daniel's designs, check out her website.

Karim Rashid and Bo Concept

Bo Concept and famed industrial designer Karim Rashid have collaborated to create a new dining collection for the spring.  A special event was held at their Madison Avenue location, and I had the opportunity to hear Karim Rashid speak about his designs.  Dressed in his signature color, pink, Rashid said he has long been a fan of Danish furniture, and was influenced by his father who believed in saving up to buy one quality piece for the year.  Karim Rashid had been following Bo Concept since its first store opened in Paris in the early 1990's.  Although he didn't think he would be designing for them, he had always admired their work.  He felt that with Bo Concept could reach the quality of high end furniture but because of volume, could offer it for middle market prices.

The collection was nostalgic for him, because he had studied the history of Danish design during his university years in Ottawa, Canada.  Thus, his collection is called Ottawa.  A lot of products shift from one function to another, for example, the expandable table, which is great for city dwellers.  Karim Rashid worked on the collection for about a year and a half with Bo Concept, starting with 50 pieces which were edited down to 10.  Rashid described the collection as "friendly, soft, and more seamless with everyday life".  The aesthetic is sensual but minimal, with high functionality and comfort.  The collection echoes nature, with soft, organic lines.  My favorite piece was the Ottawa chair, which has a shape reminiscent of a leaf.  Besides, the table and chair, there is a room divider and sideboard with an changeable color accent board in green.

In terms of accessories,  Rashid has imprinted his thumb print on a 100% wool rug as well as cups. The cups and plates have other prints, including one that he created during his university years.  There are 4 colorful acrylic neon vases that can fit together like a puzzle or used individually. The Ottawa glass pendant in white and orange and touch-activated table lamp are an ode to Scandinavian design.   To check out more of the collection, visit BoConcept.

Asia Week is happening this week and ends March 24th.  With exhibitions presented by more than 30 prominent Asian art dealers from the U.S. and abroad, auctions at, Bonhams, Christie’s, Doyle New York, iGavel, and Sotheby’s as well as dozens of special events are planned for this period, this is not something you want to miss!

NYC Vegetarian Festival

I've considered becoming a vegetarian for a while, and after recently reading 'Eating Animals' by Jonathan Safran Froer, I took the plunge for both health and ethical reasons.  I went to the NY Vegetarian Food Festival and learned about some interesting and delicious food options.  If you're interested in seeing what vegetarian/vegan foods are available, you should definitely attend. Here are some of the highlights from the festival.

Daiya -  I'm not vegan, but if I were, one of the foods I would crave is Cheese.  I tried Daiya's pepperjack style shreds and was impressed by the texture and taste.  It really tasted like cheese, and not a cheese product, like velveeta.  But make note - this is not a low calorie option!

 

Sheffa - Savory Bar - I was so happy to find these savory snack bars, because although I like sweet snack bars, there's so much sugar in them.  These Sheffa savory bars are available in sesame, everything, spicy, and rosemary flavors.  They're made with a blend of whole grains, chickpeas, and were spiced to perfection. They're also high in protein, low in sodium, and no cholesterol - the ideal healthy snack!



 

Fruit Bliss - Dried Figs, Apricots, Prunes, with no preservatives.  Need I say more?

Caviart This "caviar" made from seaweed was really interesting.  I liked the texture, but I thought the flavors were a bit strong.  I did enjoy eating the "salmon roe".  It was very similar in texture and provided that burst of flavor when I bit into it. 

Sweet & Sarah's Vegan Marshmallows - For those of you who don't know - Marshallows contain gelatin which is derived from ground up pork bone/skin.  Thankfully, we have vegan options, such as Sweet & Sarah's marshmallows - they're virtually indistinguishable from "regular" marshmallows.

Woman's Day Red Dress Awards 2012

Woman's Day held their 9th annual Red Dress Awards at Lincoln Center Jazz Center's Allen Room. The event was hosted by Hoda Kotb of NBC's Today and S. Epatha Merkerson.  Guests dressed in red dresses were treated to heart healthy foods and delicious desserts.  There were special performances by Javier Colon, winner of The Voice, an unbelievable performance by acapella group Naturally 7, DJ Mia Moretti and violinist Caitlin Moe, and closed with the phenomenal Grammy-winning group Sugarland. Honorees that received awards included Regina M. Benjamin MD, MBA, the United States Surgeon General, Mehmet Oz, MD, Star Jones, and Martha Gulati MD, MS, FACC, FAHA.  They spoke of the importance for women, who are usually the caretakers of others, to also take care of themselves and their hearts.
